UTA to phase out Blackboard, introduce Canvas

Blackboard is being phased out and will be replaced by Canvas as UTA’s new Learning Management System (LMS), Teik Lim, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs announced in an email sent to faculty and staff on Friday.

The transition for students will begin in spring 2019, with select courses being offered through Canvas. Blackboard is expected to be completely phased out by fall 2019, with Canvas being the sole LMS provider, Lim said.

Lim praised the new LMS system.

“Canvas offers exciting features and functionalities designed to help us promote student-centered learning, greater engagement and meaningful learning experiences,” he said.

Canvas includes an easy-to-learn interface, an enhanced syllabus, a course calendar and course schedule, a summarized dashboard and 24/7 phone and chat support that also includes instruction videos and guides.

Lim said that though the transition will be challenging, Canvas will be a reliable provider for both students and faculty.

“This modern, reliable, and easy-to-use LMS has the potential to transform both the student and faculty experience,” Lim said.
