A male student was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia at 1:29 a.m. on Friday at Doug Russell Park, said Mike McCord, UTA Police acting assistant chief.

After officers doing a walk-through of the park smelled burnt marijuana, they found the student with two other students, a male and female, McCord said.

An investigation revealed that one of the male students was in possession of drug paraphernalia, McCord said.

McCord said the student was issued a citation because the charge is a Class C misdemeanor. Arrest is an option, but he said issuing a citation is frequently used.

A Class C misdemeanor is punishable by a fine no more than $500, according to the Texas Penal Code.
