The cross-country teams competed in the 31st Annual Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival on Saturday in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The men’s team finished 17th of 32 teams in their 8-kilometer heat, while the women finished 16th of 27 teams in their 5-kilometer race.
Senior Justin Domangue placed 17th out of 315 total runners with a 24:19 time in the 8k race to pace the Mavericks. Junior Cole Klashinsky placed 115th with a time of 25:40, while freshman Marquentin Barnes finished 130th with a time of 25:49.
Sophomore Connor Butterfield placed 144th, clocking in at 25:58, and freshman Jack Myers rounded out the scoring for UTA in 154th with a time of 26:10. The men's team placed second among Sun Belt Conference squads that competed at the meet, with Arkansas State University placing 11th.
On the women’s side, junior Madeleine Rowe paced the Mavericks, finishing 84th of 278 total runners with a time of 18:12 in the 5k race. Freshman Mathilde Ruud placed 108th in 18:30, while sophomore Valeria Diaz placed 118th with an 18:35 time.
Junior Ieshia Dickerson finished 137th in 18:46 and senior Shayla Huebner rounded out the team and placed 139th in 18:47. The women's team also finished behind Arkansas State, which placed ninth, but topped league-favorite Texas State University, which finished 18th.
The cross-country teams will continue their seasons at 9 a.m. Oct. 19 at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in College Station, Texas.
