Freshman Lucia Natal proved victorious as the women’s tennis team competed at the Rice Invitational from Friday to Sunday in Houston.

Natal went 3-0 as she defeated competitors from the University of Oklahoma (6-1, 6-0), Texas State University (6-2, 6-2) and the University of North Texas (6-4, 6-1) to claim her flight.

In doubles, Natal and senior Agustina Serio claimed their doubles flight. Serio and Natal opened doubles with a loss, but defeated Texas State 6-3 and the University of Alabama 6-2.

The victory earned Serio her 61st career doubles win, the ninth most in UTA history.

Sophomore Anna Wichert defeated competitors from Texas State (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Oklahoma (5-7, 6-1, 6-4) before falling to Alabama (6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2).

Freshman Klara Mrcela picked up her first career win against Texas State (6-7(1), 7-5, 6-1).

The team returns to the court Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 for the 2017 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships in California.
