Marketing senior Brittney Joseph cheers at the Dancing with Mavericks dance-a-thon held Monday in the University Center Palo Duro Lounge. The event celebrated the end of Hispanic Heritage Month. (The Shorthorn: Laura Sliva) Lambda Theta Alpha sorority and Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity won first place in the Dancing with Mavericks competition. The event, held in the University Center Palo Duro Lounge, marked the end of Hispanic Heritage Month. Dance teams were judged on how long they could dance and were eliminated once they stopped. A $400 event grant was awarded to the winning organizations. “I’m more than happy to compete in something like this,” management junior Sergio Soldevilla said. “Anything that represents my culture like this, I want to be in.” The event’s judges were Frank Lamas, Student Affairs vice president, Tami Tucker, director and assistant dean of students and Liza Grove, kinesiology adjunct faculty member, who walked around and smiled at all the dancing students. Once the music began teams could not stop to talk with friends or get a drink or they would be disqualified from the round. Teams danced three rounds each lasting 30 minutes. Points were awarded based on how long the teams danced, member support and Hispanic trivia knowledge. Multicultural Affairs intern Bryant Robertson and international business sophomore Rosita Tran III danced first at the event. “I’m glad they came because most [of the teams] here are multicultural, so this will encourage other groups to join in next year,” Robertson said. “It’s going to happen every year and it’ll get bigger and bigger. ” Students dance during the Dancing with Mavericks event Monday night at the University Center Palo Duro Lounge. (The Shorthorn: Fabiola Salinas) Lamas said the event gave students time to relax and refuel. “It’s great a lot of people came to support the event,” he said. “Getting the chance to blow off some steam and have some fun. I was impressed that nobody stopped after half of an hour of dancing.” Views: 1178 | E-mail
