Finding a job after college this semester has never been easier.

All students have to do is show up, present themselves professionally and talk to employers who don’t want to hire just anybody. They want to hire a Maverick.

Career Services will host a job fair for students and alumni from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday in the University Center’s Bluebonnet and Rio Grande ballrooms.

At least 160 employers participating are from accounting, investment, retail and restaurant businesses, with 115 in the Bluebonnet Ballroom and 40 or more in Rio Grande Ballroom, Career Services director Barbara Peet said. 3,000 companies were invited to the event.

“Never has there been an opportunity so easy where the employers are coming to them,” Peet said. “All the leg work is done for them.”

Peet said recruiters from a variety of local and national companies will offer positions, including part-time internships and full-time employment. She said the goal is to showcase the students and encourage employers to “Hire a Maverick.”

Oliverio Martinez, an Internal Revenue Service recruiter, said the agency is searching primarily for business and accounting majors.

“We like to go to UTA because it has a good accounting program from what we’ve heard,” Martinez said.

Nathan de Guia, a recruiter from ARGO Data Resource Corp., said their finance company looks for those with leadership potential, creativity and innovation for entry-level positions. He said they have had great success recruiting at the university in past job fairs.

“A desire to learn, work ethic and teamwork are some of the qualities ARGO values,” de Guia said. “The banking and financial services software industry is going through a technology renaissance and ARGO needs bright minds to lead the way.”

Peet said the event usually brings about 2,000 students and that’s why it’s so successful. She said students are encouraged to present themselves appropriately for each position and to bring several resumes.

“We want employers to know that UTA Mavericks are professional, hard-working and intelligent, and they would be an asset to their team,” Peet said.

Career Services began recruiting companies months in advance, aggressively marketing to students, and they are already preparing for the next job fair in the spring, Peet said.

“We don’t get students the job,” she said. “We facilitate the connections. We get students in front of employers. It’s the biggest face-to-face opportunity.”
