Genomics lab can contribute to scientific advances

This week, the School of Nursing cut the ribbon for the Genomics Translational Research Laboratory, the first lab of its kind in the nation.

The research conducted is an exciting development for the university, and its effects will extend far beyond the university community.

Genomics studies all the genes a person carries and how those genes interact with each other and their environment, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

This research is crucial to making medical advances. Genomics plays a role in nine of the top 10 causes of death, some of which include heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and pneumonia, according to the centers.

Through studying genomics, researchers can learn what causes some people to become sick from certain infections and factors while others remain completely healthy. This may lead to breakthroughs in how doctors treat and ultimately prevent diseases.

This lab is not only good for the university, it’s an excellent opportunity for medical advances in the health care field.
