A summer day at the beach in Puerto Rico about 16 years ago turned tragic when Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity member Victor Correa was pulled down by an undercurrent and drowned. Correa’s life could have been saved if someone had performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or “CPR.” In memory of Correa, Sigma Lambda Beta members throughout the country host Victor Correa CPR Awareness Day during the week of Nov. 20 because that was the day Correa joined Sigma Lambda Beta. The university chapter decided to host the event on Nov. 19 this year. Correa was a student at Stony Brook University when he died. For the Chi Alpha chapter at the university to take such initiative in their first year impressed Mary Peterson, Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity Incorporated executive director. “CPR is something that is universal. Heart attack or head injury. It doesn’t have to be swimming,” she said. A founding fraternity member issued a proposal in 1993 to reserve a day in Victor Correa’s name so Sigma Lambda Beta brothers can be prepared to save other lives. The schedule includes activities where participants can take a quiz about CPR, a table to explain how to get CPR certified and a video to teach the basics about CPR. Everyone should learn CPR because it’s an excellent skill, said Chris Delarosa, Sigma Lambda Beta Xa chapter fraternity vice president. If someone needed CPR, he said he believes a lot of people would be nervous or scared to do something about it. “Our program will tell them the four easy steps to help them save a life,” he said. He said cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the United States. Watching the video will show students how to be a valuable bystander if the need arises. Anyone can come to the event between classes or during lunch, said Oscar Carrera, Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity brother. He said he believes there will be a lot of students visiting the event. “I don’t think people are as informed as they should be about it,” he said. “Maybe it’ll help save lives.” Views: 1884 | E-mail
