The story also should have said the MAC’s $75 membership fee is included in tuition. The Maverick Activities Center was built with the intention to be the campus’ east side home. During construction, a Web site dedicated to tracking its progress allowed students and faculty to post their thoughts. Some of those comments echoed how they believed the MAC would create a unified spirit. Bess Alvarez, Student Congress vice president, said she thinks it’s great that many students are taking advantage of the facility. “There’s a lot of progress being made at UTA, and I think a building outside of academia can be beneficial to bringing students together,” she said. “It’s another thing to be proud of as a Maverick.” Architecture senior James Newell said the MAC serves as a common point for the campus population, considering the school is primarily academic. “People can easily come up here and play racquetball and whatnot,” he said. “And the better facilities cause people to congregate more.” This is exactly what Muller said the new building was designed to accomplish. Everything including the logos on drinking fountains and lifting weights was done to create a school theme, Muller said. “As you are coming in, you see the ‘A’ on the building,” he said “And the way the building glows at night, the color scheme — it definitely enhances that school spirit.” Views: 1619 | E-mail
