On Friday, the School of Urban and Public Affairs sponsored the Texas Mayors Summit to discuss issues of air quality, public health and climate change in the Central Library. A group of public and private organizations gathered with Texas mayors to discuss the current status of air quality and climate and how to improve it. “We saw an opportunity to help connect Texas mayors with the growing international network of mayors working for climate protection,” said Jeff Howard, assistant professor in the School of Urban and Public Affairs. “This is the third year in which we’ve hosted a meeting with our long term interest of environmental issues in mind.” The conference was not open to the public but some university professors attended alongside the mayors. “The room was totally full with representatives from all over including the mayors of Austin and Waco,” Public Affairs specialist Sue Stevens said. “They discussed what cities can do with city codes and building construction to reduce the impact of global warming and to produce cleaner air.” The conference was a learning opportunity for those who attended, Howard said. “Everyone was pleased and learned a lot about the climate problem and how to fix it.” — Courtney Sevener Views: 1942 | E-mail
