Sawed off: UT Arlington Mavericks take down No. 5 UT-Austin Longhorns

The Mavericks (3-1) held on for a 7-5 victory over the No. 5 ranked Longhorns after a dramatic ninth inning that concluded with freshman pitcher Chad Nack getting the final two outs with the bases loaded.

The upset victory over Texas (2-2) was the sixth victory over a top-25 team in the last two years and 14th total for head coach Darin Thomas, who is now 2-2 against the Longhorns since 2008.

Men’s basketball looks to start new streak starting with McNeese State

In the Mavericks’ minds, it’s time to start a new streak.

After Weber State ended UTA’s 16-game winning streak on Saturday, head coach Scott Cross said today’s game against McNeese State just became the most important one of the year.

Sprinter named SLC track and field Athlete of the Week

Sophomore sprinter Clayton Vaughn was named the Southland Conference track and field Athlete of the Week by the SLC on Monday.

Vaughn won the 60-meter dash at the Oklahoma Invitational in Norman, Okla., Saturday with a time of 6.73 seconds. That time was best in the 60-meter dash for any SLC runner so far this season.

Vaughn is the fourth UTA men’s track athlete to win the award, joining senior Isiah Clements, junior Romain Martin and junior Jeff Rodriguez.

LaMarcus Reed up for Lou Henson award

Senior forward LaMarcus Reed has been nominated for the Lou Henson award.

The award goes to the top mid-major Division-I men’s college basketball player. Reed is second in the Southland Conference at 16.8 points per game. Fan voting will count for 33 percent of the award.

Fans can go to Point 3 Basketball’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/point3basketball and click on the “Lou Henson Player of the Year” tab on the left hand side under the profile picture. From there, fans will be prompted instructions on how to vote.

Sophomore named SLC Hitter of the Week

Sophomore designated hitter Matt Shortall won Southland Conference Hitter of the Week for his performance in UTA’s first weekend of games against Louisiana Tech, the SLC announced on Tuesday.

Shorthall led the Mavericks to a 2-1 record in the three games by hitting 7-for-14 (.500 average) and one triple and home run. In the Mavs’ 17-10 win over the Bulldogs, Shorthall had four of those seven hits, leading UTA to its most runs in a season-opening game in school history.
