UTA’s Diversity Week poster lacks true diversity

I was upset when I saw UTA’s poster advertising its Diversity Week, which depicted five students of three races, representing the same age group and the same culture.

The Oxford dictionary defines diversity as “a range of different things,” so why does the poster from Multicultural Affairs fail to cover all UTA has to offer in the way of diverse population? In only depicting young people, it conveniently forgets the non-traditional students, of whom there are many, and the less able-bodied, and the international student population, again of whom there are many.

Editorial: Be informed about city elections or stay home

It is time to educate yourself about city elections. General elections are May 12, and the last day to file is March 5.

Last week, Allan Saxe, political science associate professor, argued not voting can be an option. We feel that abstaining from voting is only appropriate when the voter is uninformed. Starting now leaves enough time to really educate yourself about the candidates.

The ring of dead birds shows a larger cycle of animal mistreatment

Yesterday’s eerie crime report about the 18 dead birds arranged in a circle on the north Cooper Street bridge chilled me to the bone. Most people just thought it was weird, but I find it both disconcerting and alarming.

Yet, because of the lack of information, I’m still not entirely sure what to make of the situation. The cause of the birds’ death was unclear to the police, so I don’t want to instantly cry murder if their deaths were not directly intentional. I certainly hope that the person(s) involved didn’t kill the birds — that would be despicable. I considered the alternative causes of the birds’ deaths, but they are not that much more comforting.

Letter: UTA slipped up with not notifying students of bomb scare

Dear editor,

I am thrilled to take the time away from my strenuous studies to write this letter about the bomb scare that happened two weeks ago.  It concerns me UTA Police failed to notify the student body (on campus and off) of the chain of events that took place that evening.

From what is being circulated, the reason why there was no notification is because a “threat” didn’t translate into an actual bomb found. Therefore, it didn’t warrant notification.
