Dell Inc. supported the Follett Academic Center of College Park Center with $32,496 worth of computers, according to the university.
“We are pleased to be a part of the new College Park Center and to see the positive impact that it will have on the students, staff and college life at UT Arlington,” John Mullen, Dell’s vice president and general manager for education and state and local government business, said in a statement.
The academic center is open to all UTA student athletes for studying purposes.
Volleyball head coach Diane Seymour said her athletes are required to study in the center at least four times a week, so they will get a lot of use out of the computers.
“We’ve always advocated toward study hall for our student athletes to help them be successful,” she said. “Our study hall rooms have always had maybe five or six computers. But now over at the new academic center at the CPC, it’s loaded with computers. You don’t have to worry about having your own laptop. You can just walk in and know you’ll have plenty of space to sit down. We’re fortunate that Dell was so generous to donate those.”
Freshman middle blocker Ashley Bennett said she was impressed with the new academic center and its computers.
“I think the new academic center as a whole is really going to help because it has individual study rooms that you can go in, so you won’t distract everybody who’s trying to study,” Bennett said. “I just can’t wait to get in there. Everything is just amazing and I’m just really excited.”
Seymour said the new computers will help the athletes achieve academically.
“It’s important for the students on campus for the success of their future,” she said. “Not all of our student athletes are going to go on and be professional athletes, but they’re going to be professionals at something. It’s awesome that they are so generous to help our students reach a professional life after UTA.”
The donation is part of a grand total of more than $8 million worth of gifts that have gone toward the College Park Center.
