Memes poke fun of UTA life on Facebook

The College Freshman, First World Problems Girl, Lame Pun Coon and Futurama Fry have invaded conversations by bringing the meme craze to UTA after a pair of meme pages were created on Facebook last week.

What is a meme you might ask? “Y u no know what meme is?”

They are simple, to the point, sarcastic animations of life on campus.

For example, it is well known students on campus have long dealt with parking issues, and the meme world sums up the different frustrations and successes with a single image.

“Parked on campus without a sticker,” the Success Kid begins. His punch line, “Didn’t get a ticket,” is punctuated with the baby’s fist raised in the air in triumph. The creators of the Facebook pages chose to remain anonymous.

Memes are the comically created answer to a question, usually sarcastically, that have gone viral throughout the Internet.

Ben Agger, a sociology professor who specializes in media and cultural studies, said memes give participants a medium to release a little information about themselves in a comical way.

“Memes are just the latest electronic fad in the age of the Internet,” he said. “We live in an exhibitionist culture where people want to reveal a little bit about themselves.”

Agger recently published a book called Oversharing: Presentations of Self in the Internet Age, in which he describes his theory that humans are using social media to share information about themselves.

“Memes are a form of entertainment that adds value to people’s lives,” he said. “It’s an address to boredom.”

Websites like thedailymeme.com set the standard for creating and viewing memes from around the Web and offer the chance for anyone to start creating memes.

Anyone wanting to start posting memes should make sure their information doesn’t single any one person or group out.

Public relations student Brandon Hurtado is an active poster on UT Arlington Meme and said people posting need to make sure they are careful about what they post.

“The ones that are directly offensive to people or propose a threat to people should not be posted,” he said. “Students need to take caution with those.”

Hurtado, who said his favorite meme character is the First World Problems Girl, which emphasizes the pettiness of many problems a person in an advanced country deals with. Those give Hurtado the best opportunity to laugh.

“It is a way to express myself,” Hurtado said. “Seeing my friends post things up to the page and showing in the newsfeed made me interested in coming up with new things.”

The UTA Meme Craze

Each school has its own unique identities that define life on campus, but no other school can quite recreate the issue many face in the Connection Cafe.

“Connection Cafe,” the cartoon with its arms spread out asks. “Y u no have cell service?”

Communication junior Jesse DeTienne said memes really exist for fun. While he admitted some people may use them to push an agenda of some sort, most are created to make people laugh.

“A friend of mine would post them on Facebook, and I would see them on [the website] Memebase,” he said. “I saw the UTA picture. I have been here since 2005, and I know a lot of things about UTA and those are good humor.”

UTA wasn’t the first university to have meme pages. Universities like Baylor University and UT-Austin had meme pages in place before the UTA pages began.
