Honors College council holds first meeting of semester

The Honors College council held its first general body meeting Wednesday.

The council holds meetings every other Wednesday in College Hall. The council discusses upcoming events and activities in which the organization is involved.

Alumna Jennifer Milani and Frank Lamas, vice president for Student Affairs, were invited to speak at the meeting.

Biology senior Ali Alam is president of the Honors College Council. He said it is common for speakers to come in to the council’s meetings.

“We usually have a variety of leaders from different organizations, such as McNair scholars to come in and speak about their programs,” he said.

Milani is a member of the Peace Corps. She presented a slide show of her current work in Jamaica.

“I am an environmental volunteer. I get up early in the morning do gardening. I maintain trails for tourists,” she said of her work in Jamaica.

Milani has a background in anthropology. She joined the Peace Corp because she thought it was a great way to learn other languages and cultures.

The former Honors College member lives with a host family. She shares a place with a 38-year-old single mother.

“In order to participate in the Peace Corps, you have to have a bachelor’s degree,” she said.

Lamas discussed his excitement about the opening of the College Park Center and the progress UTA has made during his six and a half years at UTA.

“We are experiencing a renaissance at UTA because of our enrollment and the construction of buildings,” Lamas said.
