A $4,650 fraudulent university check was cashed at a Bank of America branch in Dallas on July 2, said Rick Gomez, university assistant police chief.

The university accounting office received a call from its bank, Chase, July 3 stating that a check was cashed without the proper check numbers, he said. The university always sends Chase a statement listing recently issued check numbers, and the bank checks the numbers against those of checks cashed.

Rusty Ward, Business Affairs and Controller vice president, said the bank, not the university, will pay for the forged check. Banks have procedures that should prevent fraud, he said.

“There are extensive securities to prevent them from getting in our bank account,” Ward said. “People try all the time to write bogus paper on any big organization’s account.”

He said the amount of money the check was made out for is insignificant and forgers typically try to come up with an amount that isn’t large enough to raise suspicion but produces a good return.

“We are very aggressively pursing them,” he said. “We usually catch them and turn them over to the district attorney.”

The UTA seal was on the forged check but not in the right format, Gomez said.

“We have a copy of the bad check, and we are working with the Bank of America to get the video,” he said.

Gomez said he can’t do much about a convenience store or bank cashing forged checks.

“We are actually working another case where something similar happened,” he said.

Gomez wouldn’t elaborate more about the prior case, but said his detectives are working on the new case and plan to compare both cases. He also said this is the first time the university has made a fraudulent check report since he started working at UTA.

Ward said the university will not change its account numbers.

“Those numbers do not allow you to get into our bank account, because we have enormous protection around those things,” he said.
