Omega Psi Phi performs in the first All Greek Yard Show With brands and chests bared, the Omega Psi Phi fraternity called out other Greek organizations to participate in its first All Greek Yard Show. In unison, they yelled antagonistic statements as part of a Greek tradition. However, their call was not answered and no other organization came to claim the stage. The sound of gold boots stomping throughout the Central Library mall echoed as the fraternity chanted and yelled as they performed. The Omega Psi Phi members were disappointed that the other Greek organizations did not participate as they had hoped. “The yard show is an opportunity to interact with students and showcase your organization in any way possible. Unfortunately they did not represent themselves as fully as they could have,” said Tyrone Walker, Omega Psi Phi events coordinator and mechanical engineering senior. Although five other organizations had signed up to participate, the event was not organized for them to fully take part in the event. One of the organizations required a radio to perform but failed to acquire one beforehand. “There’s no competition,” broadcast news sophomore Toccara Terrell said. “I wish there was more participation.” Although several other Greeks attended the event, they remained in the audience. Approximately 300 attended the event which lasted about one hour. The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority chanted to the audience, but otherwise the Omega Psi Phi fraternity was the only group to perform. Other colleges from across North Texas and as far as Louisiana State University attended the event. The Eta Delta chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority from Texas Women’s University livened the event by chanting from the audience. Even a small boy participated by toddling to the inner circle to showcase the different gestures representing Omega Psi Phi. The crowd cheered and the toddler ran back into the crowd. “I was impressed with the campus and the support they gave us,” said Walker. “We’re just trying to enhance the college experience.” The Omega Psi Phi fraternity is one of the seven National Pan-Hellenic organizations on campus. The fraternity will host study sessions the first Tuesday of every month in the University Center’s Concho Room. The sessions will be open to all students. They will also host a poetry night in the spring and a banquet in November. “We’re promoting the Greek community,” said Jerald Davis, Omega Psi Phi member and industrial engineering graduate student. “This gives us an opportunity to show who we are.”
