A test of the university’s emergency warning system has us grateful, but scratching our heads as to what exactly the content of the cautionary message was.
It was very difficult to decipher what the omnipotent voice was saying over the megaphones perched high on poles throughout the campus.
One staff member commented that it sounded similar to that of Neil Armstrong’s legendary “one giant step for mankind” line as he floated on the moon.
Granted, the broadcast at the time was simply a test so no real safety directions were needed. But if an actual emergency took place, what’s said needs to be clear so people can take appropriate action. Those unaware that the test was only a fake-through might have had a little scare and confusion as to what the garbled warning told them.
We appreciate the university’s efforts to increase campus security. Luckily, the warning system will continue to be tested once a month. Here’s hoping we won’t need a translator next time.
