The university recently hosted the summer Special Olympic games at Maverick Stadium. Hundreds of intellectually disabled adults and children gathered to participate in athletic events such as cycling, gymnastics and tennis at a statewide level. The year-round event is intended to improve the quality of life for those with disabilities and make them feel proud of themselves, according to the Special Olympics Web site. Anything the university does to contribute to this cause, including loaning out school grounds, definitely receives approval from us. Community participation is a large step universities can take to avoid appearing as academic snobs, a sad stereotype some colleges receive. Being able to watch someone’s face light up as they cross the finish line is a bonus. Hopefully the university will continue to go for the gold and use its helping hands where needed. It wouldn’t hurt for some of the stuffy professors to get some sunshine. Views: 1897 | E-mail
