![]() Uh-oh — she’s back. Please remain calm and proceed to the nearest trash receptacle. Dispose of this paper immediately. Walk briskly away without looking back. Good. Now that we’ve eliminated readers with no respect for First Amendment rights, we can continue with this column. A Shorthorn columnist, aka me, faced much criticism for her bluntness and politically incorrect explanations to demonstrate opinions back in the Fall 2007 semester. Five months have passed and we’ve all done some growing. The columnist learned some things about herself, and hopefully readers did too. As it turns out, to express an opinion is to be criticized as having bias against other opinions. Allow me to be the first to say, “Duh.” Bias lies at the very heart of opinion writing. Let me be understood. The Shorthorn will not pass any libelous, opinionated or un-attributed information as news. The section where this column appears is clearly labeled “opinion,” and readers can expect just that. Don’t mistake the opinions printed here as representing those of the whole staff. They belong exclusively to the columnists whose names appear alongside the columns. This paper features some gracious editors who don’t practice censorship where opinions are concerned. That should be good news to all of us. Letters to the editor are for the student body to stand up to the big, bad columnist. Opinions are not only permitted, but encouraged. If the editor can’t run a particular letter in the paper, there’s always the “comments” feature on the Web site. The whole purpose of the opinion section is to generate healthy dialogue around campus. Until you feel led to speak up, sit tight and prepare to have your opinion challenged. ![]() So much has happened since this columnist left The Shorthorn due to time constraints and obscene amounts of hate mail. The strike is over and writers have gone back to work. J.K. Rowling is still making tragically comedic attempts to hold the public eye. More young starlets are exposing themselves to the camera. Coffee continues to addict, now with some help from its after-dinner cousin, the espresso martini. Stay tuned for my take on Miley Cyrus’ pending descent into Playboy-dom. Anything can and will be discussed. — Diana Golobay is a print journalism senior and columnist for The Shorthorn. Views: 1841 | E-mail
