Students who frequent the downtown location can visit the other public branches.

Students who use the Arlington Central Library will have to go farther for quiet study space as it undergoes renovation.

The Arlington Central Library, located a few blocks from campus, will be closed Feb. 18-27 as crews install new machines and create a technology studio.

Starr Krottinger, Central Library services administrator, said the changes will accommodate the addition of Quick Check machines, which allow patrons to check out books on their own. The renovations will include updating the children’s area and the creation of a technology studio with tools for graphic design.

Krottinger said the east and southeast branches will open from 2 to 6 p.m. Sundays to accommodate patrons while the main library is closed.

“It’s going to be an inconvenience for our patrons, but I hope it will ultimately be better,” she said. “I can’t wait to open with the updates.”

Hepsibah Whitaker, who attends the Arlington’s Concord Career Institute, said she and her friend, Elvis Ongera, a Weatherford College student, will be inconvenienced while the library is closed. They live across the street and will have to find other places to study.

“It will affect the quality of my studying. I can’t study at the school library because it is too small,” Whitaker said.

Ongera said he likes to study at the library because there’s no TV or radio to distract him.

“It’s the best place to study for me because Weatherford College is a long way away,” he said.

Krottinger said the building must be closed during the construction because the work will take place in the entryway, blocking access and shutting down air conditioning systems.

She said the library has had only limited renovations since it was built in 1973. The renovations will cost approximately $373,000 and include lighting and floor improvements.

The library will close again after Easter for four days, but the renovations are scheduled for completion by May.
