Leak interrupts those in UC, nearby buildings and apartments
Monday’s gas leak, while bothersome, had little effect on construction and other projects.
The gas line rupture, which occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m., interrupted diners, summer camp attendees and visitors to the University Center, and the Christian Campus Center, the Baptist Student Ministry building and several surrounding apartments were also evacuated.
Kenny Galvan is a plumber for Infinity Contractors, the construction company renovating the parking lot at the north corner of the University Center.
“They hit a high-pressure line, and they’re not letting anyone start their cars or walk by,” he said.
David Albart, assistant director for University Center operations, said freshman orientation “was delayed a bit.” He also said there shouldn’t be a significant impact on construction of the Starbucks or the restrooms on the upper level of the UC. Both projects were slated to begin Monday. The dining area where the Starbucks will be was empty except for two round tables as of Monday evening.
Assistant Police Chief Ricardo Gomez said it is unknown how many people were evacuated. He said residents from the West Crossing, Garden Club and Autumn Hollow apartment complexes were asked to leave.
“We didn’t get any reports of injuries or complaints of illness,” he said.
Gerald Maxwell, a teacher for Brownwood Independent School District, was eating lunch in the UC when the emergency siren went off. He said he and approximately 200 others were evacuated to the West Street mall.
“When I was coming out, I could smell the gas,” he said.
Maxwell is attending Advanced Placement Summer Institute classes, which are being held on campus.
“I just want to finish my lunch!” he said. Views: 45 | E-mail
