It was a labor market in Nedderman Hall on Thursday, where more than 10 prospective employers examined the quality of engineering students with the hope of filling job vacancies at their companies.
Continental Airlines recruiter Randy Lujan said the goal was to hire strongly founded students to fill immediate intern and full-time positions.
“We collected 60 resumes to fill 5 positions,” he said.
He said the company has to fill three positions with aviation engineers, one with a structural engineer and one with an interior engineer.
“We hoped to meet more alumni, but the students we met had strong internship backgrounds and seemed ready for a full-time position,” he said.
Electrical engineering senior Mekonnen Dagnew said meeting with Continental Airlines was the highlight of the event.
“I came here to physically talk to people running corporate industries to see if anything captures my mind,” he said.
Dagnew submitted resumes to five companies, two of which seemed promising.
“I got a mock interview with Vought Aircraft Industries,” he said.
He said he considered the event generally successful and looks forward to his interview with Vought.
Kim Page, TXU human resources representative, said the company was looking to hire 30 to 40 interns for the summer.
“About 10 students would be followed up out of about 30 submitted resumes, which is pretty good,” Page said. “We found a good diverse mix of males and females of different racial backgrounds.”
Electrical engineering senior Abdulwahab Suleiman went to the job fair to find companies hiring engineers and to get information about the job market.
He is interested in power companies and needed to know more about his chances after his May 2007 graduation.
“I spoke to TXU, and they talked about an upcoming project for which they would hire more engineers regardless of their location or visa status,” Suleiman said.
Page said the company is hiring students for a project aiming to build and open 11 new power plants.
Carole Coleman, co-op and internship coordinator, organized the event and was pleased with the student and company turnout.
“The event was very successful,” she said. Views: 77 | E-mail
