The World Affairs Council presents a discussion called “Unveiling the Truth: International Terrorism and al-Qaeda” Wednesday in University Hall from noon to 1 p.m. The lecture will cover al-Qaeda and terrorism in general said Jessica Ippolito, secretary of the World Affairs Council. The featured speaker will be Brent Sasley, assistant political science professor. There are a lot of misunderstandings about terrorism, Sasley said. “It gets used for political or propaganda purposes which obscures what it [terrorism] is all about,” Sasley said. “That basically prevents us from really understanding it and dealing with it, or responding to it, when it does occur.” Ippolito described Sasley as a specialist in Middle Eastern politics and said the talk is meant to clarify why terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda, Hezbollah and Hamas are formed. “Not all terrorist groups are out to get America — they have their own objectives,” Ippolito said. “Dr. Sasley is going to explain why al-Qaeda was formed and how it operates.” For more information on the discussion series or the World Affairs Council, contact Jason Jordan at jxj@exchange.uta.edu or Jessica Ippolito at jli0857@exchange.uta.edu.
