Construction workers relocate a fire hydrant Monday at the Library Mall. The hydrant is being moved as a safety precaution. The relocation of the hydrant was originally scheduled to be completed during Spring Break but was pushed back due to the weather. The Shorthorn: Laura Sliva A section of the Central Library mall will be under construction today to relocate a fire hydrant after the process was delayed last week. Jeff Johnson, facilities management associate director, said the hydrant was scheduled to be relocated last Tuesday during spring break, but the deadline was pushed back. “We were hoping to have it finished before anyone came back,” he said. “But the rain got in the way.” The hydrant, originally located down the west corner of the Science Hall , is being moved to the east corner of the Central Library mall in the common areas. Johnson said a 50-foot strip of grass was removed to install the pipes. “The water line is in place and all they have to do is install the hydrant,” he said. Johnson said the hydrant is being relocated because it was not accessible to the Arlington Fire Department. He said a street ran through the area a few years ago and the hydrant was never moved. “For convenience sake we wanted to move it up. The insurance company recommended it and the city fire department agreed,” he said. “This way they will be able to pull the truck up to it.” Fred Lopez, Tri Dal Limited foreman, said his company installed the underground pipes to connect to the hydrant. “Someone else will come and replace the grass later,” he said. The construction has been an inconvenience and the noise bothers him, said Matt Thomas, library systems personal computer maintenance tech. “For those of us who have offices right at the front, we can hear everything,” he said. “We’re in here trying to work and we hear ‘Hey, get that tool over there!’ ” he said. The library was told it would have its water cut off sometime during the move, however, Johnson said they will be able to work around it. “The water outage was cancelled last week and we won’t have to require one anymore,” he said.
