The Bravery may rock the Central Library mall at this year’s Springfest. University Events and EXCEL Campus Activities are currently working out a contract with the rock band for the April 24 concert. Michael Taddesse, Greek Life and University Events assistant director, said that contracts should be finalized by next week. He said the band recently released an album in December, Stir The Blood, that gave the band favor. “We always catch people on their way up,” he said. “The first one that comes to mind is Rihanna and she was explosive. We really feel like The Bravery is in that element.” The band has reached national play with titles like “Time Won’t Let Me Go,” which appeared in the ending credits to the film Never Back Down, and “Believe” which aired on several television shows. In addition to the headliner, Taddesse said they are looking for three other acts. Battle of the Bands, on March 26, showcases several bands, all with at least one member who attends the university. The Battle of the Bands winner will open for Springfest. Angie Mack, EXCEL Campus Traditions director, said her committee is working on narrowing the contestants from the 10 applicants. “Right now we’re checking that the applicants actually go here,” she said. Mack said this is the most applicants they’ve received since she can remember The other two acts will be artists from North Texas, even as far reaching as Denton. Taddesse said the committee is searching for local bands via MySpace and listening to radio stations. “We’re conducting a more in-depth search this week,” he said. “There are a plethora of groups in the area.” Taddesse referenced local bands like The Toadies, but said the committee is looking for less known bands. “We hope we’re possibly an avenue for local groups’ big break,” he said. The EXCEL University Events committee narrowed its selection from 36 considerations to three — 30 Seconds to Mars, We The Kings and The Bravery. “We put an offer for 30 Seconds to Mars, but they were not available,” Taddesse said. He said The Bravery was the committee’s close second choice. “It was very close,” he said. “It was dividing the committee.” Views: 717 | E-mail
