The women’s basketball team beat Sam Houston state 94-61 Thursday in Huntsville.

UTA had four players score in double figures, led by freshman forward Shalyn Martin’s 19 points. Freshman guard Tamara Simmons added 18 points while sophomore guard Meghan Nelson and junior forward Candice Champion each scored 10 points.

The Mavs never trailed in the game, as they opened up a 10-point lead in the first 2:15. By halftime, UTA led 49-22.

That lead would swell to 39 late in the second half as the Mavericks coasted to victory.

UTA held a 44-29 rebounding edge and dominated the Bearkats in the paint with a 26-10 scoring margin.

The Mavericks now hold a half-game lead over UT-San Antonio for second place in the southland Conference West Division.

The roadrunners own the tie-breaker over the Mavs for the possible third seed in the conference tournament if both teams have identical records.

For the game, the Mavericks shot 57.1percent from the field while the ‘Kats struggled, only making 33.3 percent of theirs.

Looking Ahead

With the win, the Mavs secure no worse than the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament. Due to conference seeding, UTA (16-9, 11-3) will finish with a better record than at least two higher-seeded teams, East Division leader Lamar and Northwestern state.

The Mavericks are back home at 4 p.m. Saturday to take on the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (10-14, 7-5).

In the last meeting, the Mavs beat the ’Jacks 64-56 in Nacogdoches. UTA had three players score in double figures.

Senior center Tiffeny Riles led all scores with 15 points, Martin scored 14 and senior guard Maryann Abanobi chipped in with 13.

Stephen F. Austin only had two players score in double figures. Senior guard Nikki Carr had 12 points and junior guard Natashia Green contributed 10.

The Mavs enter Saturday’s face-off on a two-game winning streak, and have won seven of nine games overall.
