The UTA women’s tennis team suffered another road loss to start the season 0-3. The Mavs lost to No. 51 ranked Old Dominion 1-6 on Saturday in Virginia.

UTA hasn’t started the season with a losing streak since 2008.

The team was scheduled to face Virginia-Richmond but the match was canceled due to inclement weather.

In the only match, UTA was able to muster a win in singles action.

Assistant coach Marco Matteucci said the team played well in doubles play.

As they were swept, the pairing of sophomores Maria Martinez-Romero and Nikola Matovicova barely lost 8-9 (5-7) in a tiebreaker to Irina Dementyeva and Diana Ivanova.

Senior Klara Jagosova and junior Daiana Negreanu lost 5-8 to Nadine Fahoum and Joanna Dobrowolska. Sophomore Katarina Mlcochova and junior Monika Hadvigerova lost 6-8 to Marija Citic and Juliana Pires.

Matovicova recorded the lone victory in singles.

Matovicova battled against Citic winning the first set 6-4, but Citic came back in the second set to win 3-6. She won the last set, 10-8.

Starting the season with back-to-back wins, Mlcochova faced undefeated No. 21 ranked Fahoum. She lost in two sets 1-6, 1-6.

“She did her best,” Matteucci said. “The girl does things differently from what we’re used to seeing. Coming to the net hard and slicing the ball.”

In another match, Hadvigerova lost a close match to Dementyeva, 3-6, 6-0, 8-10.

After missing the first two games with a shoulder injury, Negreanu returned to action. She suffered a loss to Pires, 3-6, 3-6.

Captain Jagosova continues to struggle as she lost to Dobrowolska in two sets 1-6, 2-6. Martinez-Romero lost to Ivanova 4-6, 2-6.

The women’s next scheduled matches will be at home against Southland Conference Southeastern Louisiana and Nicholls State on Feb. 27 and 28 at the UTA Tennis Center.
