Dead@17 author Josh Howard started his comic series in 2003 and will be attending the 2010 Dallas Comic Convention on Saturday in Richardson. (The Shorthorn: Rasy Ran) This isn’t a traditional comic book. Howard, who will be attending the 2010 Dallas Comic Convention on Saturday and Sunday, is an Arlington-based comic book artist and writer, known for his Dead@17 franchise. “It gets compared to Buffy a lot, but it has a lot of different things to offer,” he said. His inspirations came from “Twin Peaks,” the Evil Dead movies and C.S. Lewis books, and he describes his books as a supernatural horror with female leads. He also puts his own twists on the normal demon fare. “Watching horror movies, the girl is always the victim,” he said. “And I wanted to turn the situation.” The story follows 17-year-old Nara, who is murdered and reborn to fight demonic entities. Dead@17 wasn’t even supposed to see the light of day. “I wrote it just to see if I could complete a story,” he said. Viper Comics, the first publisher of his works, saw his portfolio and begged him to publish it. He said his initial first four issues, starting in 2003, sold out the first week they were released. The series has filled four trade paperbacks and will end after two more. “I am excited to have the whole story out there,” he said. Joan of Arc was a big inspiration for Nara, he said. That’s why she has short hair. In a later issue, the martyr even appears as a character. “Nara is the hardest to write and easiest to draw,” he said. “Because Nara has been in my head for so long, it was easy to fall back to what I would do in that situation, opposed to what Nara would do.” His newest trade paperback, Afterbirth, released in January and his next addition, The Witch Queen, publishes in March. He is now working on the art for a Ghostbusters one-shot, a single issue, for IDW Publishing. Views: 403 | E-mail
