Amanda Stone Norton wants to be the next Student Governance and Organizations director. Although she’s from outside the university, Norton said she adapts quickly and can hit the ground running.

She discussed during a forum Tuesday, her traits, priorities and reasons for why she’s the best fit for the job. Among those were her three core values: learning, inclusive excellence and sustainability.

“You will never hear out of my mouth that we are extracurricular,” Norton said. “Extra implies that what we do is outside of learning. We’re co-curricular. We are co-constructers of knowledge.”

She and two other candidates were chosen out of a national search conducted by a selection committee. Each candidate speaks in public forums to voice why they want to be the next SGO director.

Next Speaker

Who: Morolaké Laosebikan-Buggs
When: Thursday at 2:10 p.m.
Where: Student Congress chambers, University Center basement level

Molly Albart spoke last Thursday and Morolaké Laosebikan-Buggs will speak Thursday at 2:10 p.m., in the Student Congress chambers.

Norton’s latest posts were as First Year Experience director and Student Life project manager at the University of Denver. She said she wanted to be a part of an institution where it’s in the process of creating its identity. The university’s diversity and its core values were also drawing factors, Norton said.

The candidate said her biggest challenge is that she takes on too many things because she likes to be part of good ideas. But an advantage would be her willingness to do anything from moving tables to outlining five-year plans step-by-step, addressing how to advance the office she wishes to occupy.

“I do what I say and I say what I do,” she said. “I meet deadlines. But I also have that flexibility when things go wrong.”
