Evening, Mavs fans! Clint Utley, The Shorthorn sports editor here. I'll be live blogging the men's basketball game against Houston Baptist at Texas Hall. Starting lineups are being announced. For the Mavs: G: Marquez Haynes, senior G: Dwight Gentry II, senior F: J.D. Davis, senior F: LaMarcus Reed III, junior C: Ishmael Awange, sophomore
Latest Update: And the Mavs win! 84-73 over Houston Baptist. Marquez Haynes scores 32 and Brandon Long puts up 25 to propel the Mavs. Check back later for my full-game recap. Long is fouled on the rebound and makes both free throws on the other end. 84-73 Mavs. HBU seems to want to help his scoring average as Haynes is fouled AGAIN. He makes both to gives himself 32 points on the night. Mavs don't seem content with an easy win as they foul HBU with 33.8 seconds remaining. Haynes sinks the first attempt and rattles the second one home. 30 points for Haynes. Haynes is fouled again with 59.8 seconds left. He'll toe the line for a chance at 30 points. Haynes makes the foul shot and gives the Mavs an eight-point lead, 78-70. He has 28 points on the night. Haynes drives to the bucket and is fouled again. Pushing for 30 points. Haynes makes a tough turn-around jumper from 10 feet, Mavs up 75-70. Looks like the yips have bitten HBU as well, Flaherty misses both of his attempts. Haynes misses both free throws. The free-throw shooting of this team is shaky, at best. Long sinks one more three-pointer but HBU answers with two quick points of their own. Mavs lead 73-70. Haynes fouled and goes to the line. HBU makes both free throws and trails by only 2 points. LaMarcus Reed chases the play down the court after a turnover and is couled for the foul on the shot attempt. Baffled by the call, throws himself at the ref's feet. Gonzalez, fouled on the attempt, makes 1 of 2 free throws. UTA up 4. HBU makes 1 of 1 free throws. 67-65 Mavs. Long sinks ANOTHER three-pointer to get to 20 points. Mavs up 70-65. Trey Parker whistled for the blocking foul on the other end. UTA band trying its best Chicago "25 or 6 to 4" cover. I'll stick with the original. J.D. Davis now covering Gonzalez. Somebody can stop him, right? A turnover leads to a one-man fast break by Marquez Haynes. He skies for a two-handed dunk for his 23 point of the game. Mavs up 67-64. Moffit misses both free throws. HBU brings ball down but turns it over. Mavs fast break to the other end has Trey Parker picking up a loose ball and drawing a foul to add to his bucket. He makes the point after, Mavs up 65-62. Haynes dishes to Moffit on the baseline, who is fouled. Moffit attempts to get on the score sheet. Mavs in a zone defense and Gonzalez shoots them out of it with another three-pointers. Tied at 62-62. Gonzalez make both. 62-59 Mavs. Mavericks trying to slow down the ball and establish possession, pass out of bounds. Turnover. Gonzalez, HBU's saving grace, draws another foul. He'll shoot two. Haynes adding to his total, a putback to stretch the Mavs' lead to five, 62-57. J.D. Davis making a name for himself in the post. Fouled on a put-back attempt. Davis makes both free throws to give the Mavs a three-point lead, 60-57. Timeout on the floor. 7:37 remaining. Haynes scores again off his own steal. 58-57 Mavs. Haynes has 19. HBU sinks two free throws to swing the lead their way, 57-56 with 8:10 remaining in the second half. Haynes takes a steal coast to coast and draws a foul on HBU. Makes 1 of 2 foul shots to give UTA back the lead, 56-55. Haynes, not to be outdone by his backcourt mate, puts in a layup to give the Mavs a 55-54 lead. HBU draws a foul on the other end and makes 1 of 2 foul shots. On cue, Brandon Long sinks another three-pointer. He has 17 tonight to lead the Mavs. Mavs trail 54-53. HBU takes a 52-50 lead and adds two more, 54-50. Mavs need to regroup. Parker called for a travel on the base line and looks incredulous. Not sure what he is debating. HBU ties the game at 50-50 with 11:39 remaining in the second half. Moffit looks out of sorts after putting up an ill-advised attempt from the base line. Moffit, in his first action of the second half, draws a charge. Looking for ways to change the game if he isn't scoring. Gentry scores for the first time in the half. Mavs up 50-48. Long intercepts Lewis' pass but after his layoff to Gentry, his pass to Parker is booted out of bounds. Gonzalez continues to score for HBU. UTA might need a different defensive approach to guarding him. Tie game at 48-48. Long takes the ball to the bucket and isn't even approached. Lewis, the near-7-footer, doesn't look like he wants to be a big man for HBU> Parker makes the foul shot, 46-42 Mavs. Haynes dishes to Trey Parker for the bucket and foul. Timeout and Parker will shoot a free throw after the break. 45-42 Mavs leading. Trey Parker back on the floor. Grabs an offensive rebound but is fouled on the way back up. Misses both free throws but Dwight Gentry comes up with the ball before it is swatted by Lewis of HBU. Another free-for-all on the floor and Davis comes out with the ball. Cross calls a full timeout. Davis making himself know in the paint over much taller HBU players. Davis makes 1 of 2. 43-42 Mavs. Long feeds Davis in the paint, who is fouled on the way up. He'll shoot two. HBU ties up the game with a three. Haynes misses a turn-around jumper but Davis cleans up his miss. Mavs up 42-39. Reed gets the scoring started in the second half with a 10-foot jumper. Mavs take the floor with the starting lineup of: G: Haynes G: Gentry F: Reed F: Davis C: Awange Second half firing up at Texas Hall. Brandon Long was all smiles in the shoot around coming out of the lockerroom. Looks like his scoring is upping his mood. UTA leads 38-37 at halftime. A lead is a lead, but the Mavs were looking for a better showing against the Huskies. Haynes has 14 points, Long has 12 to pace the Mavs. Haynes back on the floor to end the half. He attempts a NBA three but it gets stuffed. 2.6 left on the clock. Cross calls a 30-second timeout with 20.6 seconds left in the first half Gonzalez scores AGAIN for HBU. Mavs up 1. With Haynes out, Armani Williams scores on the drive. Gonzalez answers with his own bucket. Mavs up 3, 38-35. HBU hits 1 of 2 free throws to cut UTA's lead to three. Tallest player on the floor for the Mavs is LaMarcus Reed. Haynes scores but goes down in a heap. Looks like he has fallen on his backside. Gets up and smiles when walking it off. Close call for the Mavs. He is THE player the Mavs can't do without. Haynes is the fastest player on the floor, scores his 12th point of the half. Mavs up 34-30. Timeout at 3:39 in the first half, Mavs up 32-30. Long hits his third three-pointer of the half. Finding his stroke @ the right time. UTA having trouble dealing with HBU's size in the post. Moffit air balls his free-throw attempt. Needs to get his legs back under him. Good thing this isn't a conference game for him to come back. Moffit getting down and dirty on the floor for a loose ball. UTA comes away with it and a foul is called on HBU. Moffit to the line. Cross screaming at Armani Williams for not running the play correctly. Oh, the joys of being a freshman. Sorry for the delay, technical difficulties. These internets aren't what they used to be. Mavs lead 29-26 with 5:40 remaining in the first half. Long has nine points. Cross calls a timeout with 9:05 left. HBU doubles down on Haynes and forces a turnover. Gentry called fo rthe block on the other end of the court. HBU tries a half-court press but is easily broken down by UTA. Haynes assists on Long's three-pointer, 22-18 Mavs. Gonzalez is HBU's main threat with seven points so far. Catlett grabs a rebound off Davis' missed shot and puts back the layup, 19-18 Mavs. Long determined to up his scoring. Previous two games he has had only one point in first half of each. Makes 1 of 2 free throws to give the Mavs a 17-16 lead. Catlett, although a freshman, has the build of a senior. Skies to grab a rebound from Moffit's missed shot and is fouled on the way back up. Makes 1 of 2 free throws. Tie game, 16-16. Mavs featuring a four-guard lineup: Long, Haynes, Catlett and Gentry. Moffit is the post man. Haynes has 10 points with 11:33 remaining in the first half. He might have a chance to up his scoring 24.3 ppg scoring average. Haynes back on the floor @ 12:30. HBU scores from the baseline and takes lead, 14-12. HBU junior forward Damien Lewis, 6'11'', 270 lbs, checks into the game and scores a bucket. What a monster. Haynes responds with another three-pointer. Mavs trail, 15-16. Gentry gives Long a breather. HBU freshman guard Andrew Gonzalez with five early points for HBU. Long steals and easy layup, 12-12. After made jump shot, HBU cuts lead to 10-9. Two freshman guards, Armani Williams and Cameron Catlett, on the floor for UTA. Haynes is off the floor. Men's head coach Scott Cross looking to rest Haynes in non-conference affair. Gentry makes the foul shot, 10-7 Mavs. HBU makes 1 of 2 layups. Gentry makes bucket and draws foul on the other end. He'll shoot one from the line. 9-7 Mavs. Moffit fires up a 3pt attempt but it bounces off rim. HBU draws foul at other end. Two shots. Mario Flaherty makes both. Haynes scores a quick bucket on the other end, 7-6 Mavs leading. Moffit enters game. First time he's seen the floor since early December. Awange whistled for his second foul only 17:33 into the game. He'll take a seat and junior forward Trey Parker takes his place. Offense looks shaky early. Haynes driving and scores on a layup. 5-2 Mavs. UTA wearing white jersey and shorts with orange and blue trim. Houston Baptist in all orange with white and blue trim. Mavs up 3-2. Have committed two early fouls. Running a zone defense and create a turnover. Awange called for an early foul. Mavs got an offensive rebound after Haynes' first missed shot.
