Sophomore center Ishmael Awange, left, battels with bearkat forward Preston Brown for possesion of a rebound on Saturday during the Mavericks' 67-64 loss to Sam Houston State. (The Shorthorn: Andrew Buckley) UT Arlington lost to Sam Houston State on Saturday night in Texas Hall 67-64. The Mavericks trailed by 18 points early in the second half. From there, they outscored the Bearkats 37-22, but didn’t have enough to come back for the win. “If we play with that type of intensity and energy that we did in the second half, we’ll get this thing turned around and we can get it rolling,” men’s head coach Scott Cross said. “It can’t be who we are when we’re down 15. It’s got to be who we are when the ball’s thrown up.” Senior guard Marquez Haynes scored 11 points in the first half but committed three turnovers. The Mavericks as a team shot 32 percent from the floor. In comparison, SHSU shot 47 percent from the floor. The Bearkats had two players - junior forward Gilberto Clavell and senior guard Corey Allmond – score in double figures in the first half. “He’s probably one of the better post players we’ve played all year,” senior forward J.D. Davis said of Clavell. “The fact that Clavell can catch it out on the perimeter and make moves to the inside really opens a lot up for their offense.” Haynes said his team figured it out in the second half. “We played with some heart,” he said. “That was it. It wasn’t no X’s and O’s. Find it within yourself to have some pride out there and care about what’s going on.” Senior guard Dwight Gentry II (2) leaps between defenders Drae Murray (5) and Preston Brown (15) to shoot a layup during the Mavericks’ 67-64 loss to Sam Houston State on Saturday at Texas Hall. The Mavericks have a record of 1-4 in conference play. (The Shorthorn: Andrew Buckley) The Mavericks found that pride in the second half. After registering only two steals in the first 20 minutes, the Mavs had seven steals and forced nine SHSU turnovers before the end of the game. Although the effort was there, the end result wasn’t. SHSU outrebounded the Mavs 22-16 in the second half. It seemed each time UTA would get a defensive stop, a Bearkat would be there to grab the rebound and begin a new possession. “Story of the year,” Haynes said. “We work on it in practice. It’s just a matter of you got to go get them.” Two free throws by senior Guard Brandon Long cut the Bearkats’ lead to eight with 13:04 remaining in the second half. SHSU built the lead back to 15 points with 10:24 left, but the Mavs surged again. A layup by Davis at the 8:06 mark cut the deficit to single digits again. The game went down to the final seconds. Haynes sank two free throws with :11 left to get within two. SHSU attempted a full-court inbounds play but threw the ball out of bounds and gave the Mavs a chance with :05 remaining to tie or take the lead. Long missed a three-point attempt on the inbounds play. Clavell pulled down the rebound, was fouled by Davis and made one of two free throws to end the game 67-64. Views: 549 | E-mail
