The Student Health Advisory Committee held its second annual Spa Retreat Monday with giveaways, yoga, massages and aromatherapy.

The retreat was held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Center Palo Duro Lounge.

Donielle Smith, health promotion and substance abuse coordinator, said the committee started the event because they felt it was important to give students an opportunity to recharge before finals.

“It’s a time for students to relax, take a break and de-stress before [finals] hit,” she said.

Secondary English junior Jamie Warner said she’s nervous about her Spanish and grammar finals. Warner said she doesn’t think a spa
retreat would help ease the finals’ stress as much as offering free coffee.

“I plan to wake up early and stay up late studying,” Warner said.

Smith said more massages, provided by Tricare Chiropractic and Precision Nutrition and Body Contouring, and games were offered this year than last year.

Allison Bailey, nursing senior and committee member, said the retreat featured free gift bags, games such as Sudoku, Uno and chess, free massages, aromatherapy and a place to study.

Bailey said specifically more card and board games were added to the event since its start last year.

She said having a retreat may help students enjoy school more.

“Right before finals, studies probably show that students do better on finals if they’re relaxed and not as stressed,” Bailey said.

Kinesiology sophomore Anthony Rene passed by the retreat and decided to participate.

Marketing junior Anthony Hawkins said he’s not nervous about finals because he has plenty of time to study, but liked the retreat idea.

“If you have a moment to relax before finals, it takes some of the stress off and gives you time to reflect on what you have to do,” he said.
