The men’s basketball team ended its early-season home stretch Tuesday night at Texas Hall by defeating UT-Permian Basin 70-47.

Senior guards Brandon Long and Marquez Haynes each scored 19 points to lead the team over the Falcons. Haynes was 5 for 7 in three-point attempts. Sophomore center Ishmael Awange opened the scoring for the Mavs as the team went on a 9-0 run in the first three and a half minutes.

Although the team went on the 9-0 run, Long said his team needed even more energy.

“I felt like we came out flat like we did against Eastern Washington,” he said. “We came out a little bit better, but I felt it was still a little flat. But we picked it up at the end.”

Haynes agreed with Long that the team started slow and offered perspective on why the team did that in its previous two games.

“I think we’re a little hesitant to mess up assignments,” he said. “When you’re confident in what you’re doing, you can be way more aggressive doing it. We might be hesitant to do certain things. It’s new to us, this style of defense we’re playing.”

Senior forward Tommy Moffitt scored all of his eight points in the first period and freshman guard Cameron Catlett had all of his four points in the first also. Although the Mavs won by 23 points, the Falcons had a better shooting percentage, 53.3 percent, than the Mavs’, 50 percent in the first half.

The team was forced to play a smaller, guard-oriented lineup in the first half with Awange and freshman center Jordan Reves each registering two fouls. Long said the time to fix the foul problem is between games.

“Preparation through practice. We keep trying to drill it in their head that the stuff they’re doing is fouls,” he said. “We can’t be them, we only can tell them.”

Head coach Scott Cross said his big men, notably Reves and Awange, will take some time to develop.

“It’s definitely a work in progress,” he said. “I think both of them are going to be very good players. Big guys tend to develop a little bit slower than guards.”

Long finished the first half as the only Mav to reach double digits in scoring with 11. Haynes, in an attempt not to repeat his performance against Eastern Washington, where he had nine turnovers, finished the game with two assists and no turnovers.

“That’s always a much better job,” Haynes said. “I’m definitely happy with that, taking care of the ball better.”

The Mavs improved their defense in the second half to hold the Falcons to a shooting percentage of 27.6 percent. The Mavs shot 40 percent, 8 of 20, in the game from behind the three-point line.

Senior guard Dwight Gentry II, with six points and three assists, seemed to find the rhythm he has been searching for with the offense this season.

“I’ve been waiting for that out of Dwight,” Cross said. “He struggled the first couple of games, but he definitely brought a very positive energy out on the floor.”

Junior forward Trey Parker went down with a left knee injury with 7:55 remaining in the first half but returned in the second.

Cross ran a 1-3-1 zone for the second game this season but said he won’t rely on it heavily. He said the use of the zone defense was a result of the size advantage his team had over the Falcons and the desire to have two shot-blockers on the floor.

The Mavs will play their first road game Monday night against Houston Baptist at Sharp Gymnasium.
