The UTA men’s basketball team has had a feel for the dramatic in the first three games of the season and the trend continued Saturday against Eastern Washington in Texas Hall. In a rematch of last season’s heartbreaking loss to Eastern Washington, the Mavs fell in another close game by a final score of 72-68. The Mavericks came out with a slow start, which included them facing an 18-point deficit in the first half. Senior guard Marquez Haynes came out hot for the Mavs and scored 15 in the first half, but it seemed that didn’t help any. No other Maverick had more than five points in the first half of the game. In the second half the Mavs would rally to cut the deficit within three, but after every basket Eastern Washington would answer right back with a score of their own. A Haynes three-pointer with 50 seconds remaining brought the score to 66-69. UTA had a chance to get the ball back when freshman guard Jeffrey Forbes went to the free throw line. The Mavs’ chances slipped away after an offensive rebound sealed the game — Eastern Washington put the game away on the next free throw. This loss puts the Mavs on a two-game losing streak early in the season. Head coach Scott Cross said his team wouldn’t be in this position if they came out like they did against North Texas last week. “The bottom line is that we lost that game because we didn’t have the same intensity that we had against North Texas,” Cross said. “If we had that same intensity, then I think the game would have been a different story.” Haynes has led the Mavs in scoring in every game of the season, as he put up 32 points in the game. Haynes contributed the loss to his team’s slow start and lackadaisical attitude early on. “Any time you dig a hole that deep, you have to expend a lot of energy to get back in the game,” he said. “We didn’t have lot of energy when we came out, and we paid for it. We definitely have to come out with more intensity the next game.” Sophomore forward LaMarcus Reed was the other Maverick to reach double digit points putting up 13. Reed said the game taught the team it has to come out early on and be focused if it wants to have a chance to win. “We can’t wait until we are down 19 or 20 points before we are ready to play basketball, we have to go out there and be ready to play from the jump,” he said. The Mavs will host UT-Permian Basin at 7 Tuesday in Texas Hall. Views: 857 | E-mail
