Computer science and engineering senior lecturer Arthur Reyes was shot and killed Sunday night. According to a release from the Arlington Police Department, police officers responded to a domestic shooting call at about 9:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of Lakeside Drive. When officers arrived, they found Reyes’ body in the garage. He was 45. Evidence at the location led officers to believe Arthur Reyes’ estranged wife, Colette Reyes, 50, had shot her husband, Arlington police spokeswoman Tiara Ellis Richard said. Colette Reyes was arrested at the scene and was taken to the Arlington Police Department Jail. She has been charged with Arthur Reyes’ murder. Richard said officers hope to gather more information about what was happening in the house from Colette Reyes. The couple was preparing for a divorce and Arthur Reyes had moved out four weeks ago, Richard said. She said he had been at the house to gather some of his belongings. The university is making counseling available for any students of Reyes, and the College of Engineering is working to make sure students are taken care of academically and personally, said university spokeswoman Kristin Sullivan. Bob Weems, Department of Computer Science and Engineering associate chair, said he knew Arthur Reyes for the 10 years Reyes worked at the university. “I’m fundamentally sad with the loss,” Weems said. “The greatest concern for everybody is his two daughters.” Reyes taught a variety of software engineering and game programming classes, he said. “He always seemed to be excited,” Weems said. Weems said Arthur Reyes took a recent interest in an introductory computer science class and was slated to teach in the spring. “I got a voice mail from one of the secretaries,” Weems said. “I was a little confused at first, because another faculty member has been hospitalized. When I found out it was Dr. Reyes, I was very shocked.” Richard said police had responded to the residence twice before. On Oct. 17, Arthur Reyes was given a Class C misdemeanor citation for assault. She said he received the same citation in May 2007. Views: 1122 | E-mail
