Shearin finished with 17 kills in the match but UT-Arlington lost to the Cardinals in four sets. (The Shorthorn: Clint Utley) The 2009 volleyball team’s season came to an end Friday in San Antonio at the Southland Conference Tournament. The Mavericks (12-17) lost in the first round to familiar foe Lamar. UTA took the first set but Lamar responded by taking the next three and the match. Friday’s matchup between the two schools was the third time the teams played each other this year. “I’m proud of the way our kids fought,” head coach Diane Seymour said. “I’m very glad that they were able to battle back in both games three and four. They should be proud of that fact. I don’t think we played our best volleyball today, but sometimes that happens. We came up just a little bit short.” Although the Mavs took the first set 25-21, it didn’t come easily. Twelve ties and six lead changes in the set was evidence of evenly matched teams. The two sophomores named to All-Southland Conference teams last week, outside hitter Tara Frantz and middle blocker Emily Shearin, led the Mavs with eight and seven kills respectively in the first set. Junior setter Raegan Daniel had 13 assists after the opening set. Lamar wasted no time in the second set by building a 13-7 lead before UTA called a timeout. The Mavs rallied with a good run of play to cut the lead to 16-13 before the Cardinals called a timeout. After the break, Lamar used an 8-4 run to seal the set. The Mavs had a -.030 hitting percentage in the second set for seven kills. Lamar, on the other hand, put down 13 kills and posted a .243 hitting percentage. “We kind of got too comfortable with winning the first one,” Shearin said. “I don’t think we were as aggressive as we could have been.” A kill from Daniel gave the Mavs a 3-1 lead early in the third set but it didn’t last long as Lamar took a 7-1 run that led to a UTA timeout. The Mavs never recovered from the deficit and lost the set 21-25. Sophomore libero Alicia Shaffer led her team with a career-high 27 digs in the match. She agreed that the team was too relaxed after winning the first set. “We got in a comfort zone,” she said. “They started rattling off some good serves and all of a sudden they have a seven-point jump on us.” Shaffer said after seeing Lamar come back from losing the first set, her team’s mindset changed from “we’re going to win” to “maybe we’re not going to win.” “That doubt got into our mind and it just went downhill from there,” she said. UTA produced another early lead in the fourth set at 5-4 before Lamar called a timeout. After the break the Cardinals built a 15-11 lead. From there the Mavs cut Lamar’s lead to 24-22 but didn’t get any closer as Lamar won the set 25-22. Views: 793 | E-mail
