Editorial Roundup

The Issue: Our athletes are very talented and should be recognized.

We Suggest: Show your school spirit and check out the talent on our teams.

Even without football, the university has many other sports. Showing school spirit and attending games this season is part of what it means to be a Maverick.

We should be proud of our volleyball team, especially sophomores, Tara Frantz and Emily Shearin. The two players were chosen for SLC All-Conference teams. An honorable mention went to senior Bianca Sauls.

The women were chosen on their own merit, volleyball head coach Diane Seymour was not allowed to vote for her team’s players. If you can make it down to San Antonio, the team will be playing Lamar at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Saturday they will play the winner of Texas State vs. Southeastern Louisiana.

The university has two great basketball teams. Since we don’t have football, basketball is our big sport. And our players are good at it.

The season just started and the next game for the men is against Eastern Washington at 7 p.m. Saturday at Texas Hall. The women also play at home against University of Missouri-Kansas City at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

As Texas Hall is a unique venue for sports with the teams playing on a stage. The location was named The Best Place in America to Watch College Basketball by Sports Illustrated in 1997.

Not for long will teams continue to use the facility — the planned special events center will be the athletic events’ new home.

Since watching the games in Texas Hall won’t last forever, you catch a game there before it’s too late.

The center will be approximately 190,000 square feet and with about 6,500 available seats. The new venue’s completion is slated for early 2012.

Show your school spirit and let the players know how much pride the university has for them. Support the teams, rally for them and let them know the rest of the university supports their accomplishments.

Be a Maverick. Be proud of our sports teams, they are a vital part of the university.
