After breaking the losing-on-the-road jinx last weekend, the volleyball team begins play in the Southland Conference Tournament Friday in San Antonio. Lamar, UTA’s first-round opponent, hosted the Mavs on Oct. 2, handing them their first conference loss of the season. The Mavericks evened the season series when they hosted the Cardinals on Nov. 7. Head coach Diane Seymour said her team’s first SLC win on the road against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi helped the Mavs’ psyche. “They felt really good about it, obviously,” she said. “Now, we look back, and wish we could have carried that over into Saturday [against UTSA]. We played well on Friday and kind of got the monkey off our back.” This week SLC announced this season’s All-Conference teams. Sophomore outside hitter Tara Frantz received first-team honors; sophomore middle blocker Emily Shearin landed on the second team and junior hitter Bianca Sauls received an honorable mention. Lamar had representatives on each team as well. Senior setter Adrianne Meengs was selected to the first team, freshman middle blocker Wendy Krell grabbed a second-team selection and senior middle blocker Lauren Holdorff got an honorable mention. Seymour said her team will need to be prepared for Lamar’s upperclassmen. “We’re going to have to do a good job of defending their seniors,” she said. “[Kaci] Brewer’s had a good year and Lauren Holdorff on the right side has had a good year as well. Their setter, Adrianne Meengs, does a really good job of setting the right hitters at the right time and she’ll find ways to score for herself as well. Hopefully we’ll carry a little bit of how we played against them at our place into the conference tournament.” Frantz said her team is heading into the tournament with an objective in mind. “All we have to do is win three games,” she said. “We’ve beaten each of these teams. We haven’t beaten Texas State, I take that back. But we could.” Meengs will present the team with a new obstacle to face. “Meengs is left-handed so were practicing to where she can’t hit against us,” Frantz said. Shearin said the team’s first conference road win last weekend will provide a boost. “It was exciting to finally get that road win that we’ve been looking for,” she said. “It will help us this weekend in San Antonio. We’ve played in that gym before. We’ll play our game and come out with the win.” Seymour said her teammates who didn’t receive all-conference selections could be motivated for future honors. “Maybe it does motivate some other kids to say, ‘Hey man, I’ll shoot for making all-tournament’ at the conference tournament,” she said.
