Sophomore guard LaMarcus Reed draws a foul on a jump shot during the Mavericks' 101 to 99 double overtime loss to North Texas on Wednesday at Texas Hall. Reed made both the jump shot and free throw as part of his 15 points for the night. (The Shorthorn: Chris Hudson) Senior guard Brandon Long had 28 points but missed an opportunity for 30 as his attempt to tie the game rimmed out as the time expired. Senior guard Marquez Haynes had 29 but the Mavs were unable to stop UNT’s feisty junior guard Josh White, who had 35 points. “If I could get the pull-up, I would get a better look at it,” Long said of his last-second attempt. “I took the pull-up and it just hit the back of the rim. It was a good shot. I felt like – I thought I made it – it just hit the back of the rim.” The Mavs took a 40-34 lead into halftime due to forcing 13 North Texas turnovers. Head coach Scott Cross assigned 6-foot-5-inch sophomore forward LaMarcus Reed III to guard White. “Defensively, he did about as good of a job as you could ask on Josh White when he was in the game,” Cross said. “He’ll do a great job all year long pestering the ball handler.” UTA had its chances to win the game. Haynes missed a jump-shot at the end of regulation that sent the game to the first overtime and at the end of that period, Long missed the second of his two free throws, which took the game to a second overtime. “When we came down, we got good looks each time,” Haynes said of his team’s inability to finish the game. “You prepare for those situations. Me and Brandon both had looks at it. And just as many times as we missed tonight, we’ve made those same looks.” Both teams experienced fatigue in the second overtime with only 12 total points scored in the frame. White had five of his team’s seven points – three of those coming from the free-throw line. Haynes and Long ran the offense for the Mavs but only produced five points. “Logging a lot of minutes, you know, your legs kind of get to you,” Long said. “Really no excuse for it. Just need to knock it down.” Senior forward Tommy Moffitt had 14 points and eight rebounds and Reed added 15 points while guarding North Texas’ top-scorer. “LaMarcus is a guy that very, very seldom breaks down defensively,” Cross said. “Everybody breaks down at times, but he very seldom does it.” Haynes said the team could take more than just a loss from the game. “All you can do is get back in the gym and next time knock it down. We definitely learned a lot, I learned a lot from this game,” he said. “It put us in a lot of different situations that we can’t really simulate in practice. We’ll definitely be better from this.” Views: 856 | E-mail
