For sophomores Tara Frantz and Emily Shearin, the hard work the two put in during the offseason converted in success.

On Wednesday, the pair was named to the All-Southland Conference Team. Frantz, an outside hitter, was named to the first team while Shearin, a middle blocker, received second-team honors. Head coach Diane Seymour noted that she was not allowed to vote for her players.

“Their award is based on their merit and what the other coaches see in them,” she said. “It gives them an idea that some of the other coaches in the league do respect their ability.”

Frantz led the team in kills this season with 220 while averaging 2.75 kills per set and reached a career-high two times with 16 kills. She said she set a goal in the summer to be an all-conference player this season.

“I wanted to go from nothing to something,” she said. “I expected, at tops, second-team because I didn’t play back row.”

Shearin led the Southland Conference in blocks with 1.25 per set and led her team in blocks in 16 matches this season. She said she was proud of her improvement from a year ago.

“I was really excited,” she said. “It was a big turn-around from last year because I didn’t do very good last year.”

Frantz reached double-digit kills in 13 matches and has posted at least 10 kills in four of the last five matches. Shearin didn’t confine her play to the net this season. She has 147 kills and has led her team in service aces eight times.

Junior hitter Bianca Sauls earned honorable mention. She is second on the team with 2.16 kills per set and totaled 212 kills this season.

The well-rounded player had 279 digs, 103 assists and 50 total blocks.

Seymour said her players’ honors reflect the team’s ability.

“It’s everybody’s award as well,” she said. “Without some other people doing some work around you, you don’t get that award. I think it will definitely motivate some people to continue to play well.”
