Editorial Roundup

The issue: Student elections were Monday and Tuesday and decided several student leadership positions.

We suggest: Whether you voted or not, get to know your representatives and help them improve the university.
You may not recognize their names or even their faces, but the students elected Tuesday were chosen to represent you.

Use them.

Each fall and spring, students choose their representatives. Positions elected Tuesday included Homecoming court, UTA Ambassadors and Student Congress senators.

These students were elected for their high level of involvement within the university and passion for making it better. Now, it’s up to us to help them do achieve that goal.

SC meets weekly to discuss and create resolutions proposed to improve the campus. A resolution is a document drafted to express opinion or request change.

One resolution adopted this year asked administration to allow broadcast of non-mtvU stations in the University Center food court area, allowing the community to stay updated on the latest news.

A resolution adopted in the 1990s helped ensure no classes be scheduled at noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It provided a time for student organizations to meet.

Senators routinely author, propose and adopt resolutions like these. Any student can author a resolution, including you, as long as you can find a senator to sponsor your resolution.

Resolutions have the potential to make an impact on the university. They have a process to go through, unlike a letter of complaint you might send. They are researched and voted upon, and adopted resolutions make their way up to university administration. A proposal backed by research and several students carries more weight than a long-winded e-mail.

Communicate with SC because it matters more than venting amongst friends.

Learn who represents your college at the Student Governance Web site and keep in touch with them. Let them know what issues matter to you and changes you would like to see.

Attend SC meetings at 6 p.m. Tuesdays in the UC lower level. You can also view minutes and watch meetings online.
Use your representatives and multiply your voice.
