When & WhereWhen: 7-8 p.m. TuesWhere: The Central Library mall, near the flagpoles Delta Sigma Pi, a coed business fraternity, organized the event. UTA’s Residence Hall Association and the African Student Organization cosponsored it. Nearly 80 people are expected. “People have forgotten the true meaning of Veterans Day,” said James, the fraternity’s community service vice president. “It is not the day you get a sale at Macy’s. It should be a day when we say thank you to our service members for all that they do.” When people think of such events, they associate them with politics, but the group does not represent any political view, James said. “We just want to say ‘thank you’ to these men and women for their sacrifices,” she said. “After all, they’re someone’s mother, father, brother and sister.” The shooting that erupted in Fort Hood around 1:30 p.m. Thursday left 13 dead and 31 wounded. Some were service men and women. The man the police identify as the shooter was a military officer. Fort Hood is one of many bases that prepare soldiers for deployment and eventual combat. On Thursday, the gunman opened fire in the Soldier Readiness Processing Center. “Those were their last days at home,” James said. “They should have been able to trust that they were safe. But instead, their trust was betrayed.” The vigil will be from 7 to 8 p.m. around the flag poles in front of the Central Library. “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “My Country, ’Tis of Thee” will be sung, and the finale will include a release of balloons.
