Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s single player storyline picks up right where the original left off. MW2’s multiplayer has also been overhauled with new perks and enhancements that will keep fans of the franchise coming back for more. (Courtesy: Activision-Blizzard)

Rey Hunt will spend the day in battlefields. He’ll be sniping, running and gunning through landscapes while trying to stay alive.

The public relations junior won’t be in battle fatigue during these firefights. Instead he’ll wear his pajamas, sit in his blue lounge chair and connect to the war through his 47-inch, flat-screen TV, surround-sound system and PlayStation 3 controller focused on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Many critics and gamers alike consider the game, shortened to Modern Warfare 2, the biggest video game release of the year. So big in fact, Hunt is considering its release a holiday.

“I took off a month in advance,” he said. “I never take off so I thought I might as well use those sick hours for something.”

The game is the sequel to developer Infinity Ward’s 2008 award-winning Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The series’s campaign features a fleshed-out story.

But more so, players spend their hours with the game’s multi-player that challenges them with several game modes, player progression and unlockable power-ups. So, it’s not just hardcore gamers that are addicted.

Sammy Huda, nursing sophomore and GameStop video game store employee, said he’s seen people from all age groups pre-order the first-person shooter game. He estimated that his store alone has had more than 150 reservations for Modern Warfare 2.

He said he’s seen someone from every, gender, race and age show interest in Modern Warfare 2.

“There’s little kids, or families, it’s a wide variety, even casual gamers,” he said. “It’s a pretty good mix.”

Hunt said he’s seen people his age, 32, play the original Modern Warfare and he’s even been “pwned,” a gamer phrase for owned, by 12-year-olds. He said he expects the same player variety in the sequel.

He said he plays because of the game’s interactivity.

“It takes you away from the everyday routine. When I play now I can be in Istanbul,” he said. “It’s an escape because I can’t afford a vacation.”

He said he, along with other people, loves the series for it’s realistic game play and massive online community.

“The game tailors to your style of play, whether you like to be a sniper or go gunning,” Hunt said.

Huda said people keep playing because they can enjoy the game with others around the world.

“Because you’re playing with other people, you never play the same game,” he said.

Biochemistry junior Tuan Phan plays the multiplayer modes and said it’s one way to test one another.

“Everyone wants to say they’re good because no one wants to say they suck,” he said.

Phan said he played video games when he was younger but took a several-year hiatus. He doesn’t consider himself a gamer and only plays Modern Warfare when he has time.

Currently, he is juggling 16 course hours along with more than 40 hours a week in two research laboratories. After doing academic work, then working with unnatural amino acids and he finds two hours a week to unwind with Modern Warfare.

“It’s a stress reliever,” he said. “I don’t get mad when I die, I used to when I first started playing but I grew out of it. I try not to take it too seriously.”

Phan said he prefers Modern Warfare to other games because of its setting.

“I got tired of the World War II theme, and I don’t like Halo because of aliens, I like Modern Warfare because it could happen,” he said.

In the game, players battle against a radical leader whose international terrorist attacks attempt to create chaos around the world.

“I like the game because it’s easier for our generation to understand terrorists and terrorist attacks,” he said.

Phan said the way Infinity Ward showcases the plot reminds watching a feature film. There’s a dramatic story with twist and being able to see the effects of war through a soldier’s eyes sells the experience to him.

Rey Hunt’s wife, Heather, has heard him talk about the game a lot. She’s not worried that the game will ruin things in the household and is excited to watch or play with him.

Rey Hunt said he’s looking for a challenge and invites PlayStation 3 owners to play with or against him: his username is Big-Rey.
