Junior Bianca Sauls, Sophomore Emily Shearin, and Assistant Coach Christina Melvin block the ball from a spike. The team is working on finding the hole on the other side of the court by calling out zones to their teammates. (The Shorthorn: Morganne Stewart) After losing its first home Southland Conference match of the season Tuesday to Texas State, the volleyball team has only two more matches at Texas Hall. The Mavs (9-15, 5-7) play Sam Houston State at 7 tonight and Lamar on Saturday afternoon. The team is third in the conference with 2.12 blocks per set and sixth with 14.87 digs per set. Junior setter Raegan Daniel is seventh in the SLC with 8.36 assists per set, sophomore middle blocker Emily Shearin ranks fourth with 1.01 blocks per set and sophomore libero Alicia Shaffer sits ninth with 3.49 digs per set. In Tuesday’s match sophomore outside hitter Eld-hah Kaswatuka provided an offensive spark on the court by tallying nine kills and chipping in nine digs. Head coach Diane Seymour said Kaswatuka was brought in to boost the team. “We went to her [Tuesday] night to provide emotion and to help us block,” she said. “We’re going to have to do a good job of blocking [Thursday] as well.” Although Kaswatuka’s effort against Texas State was significant, Seymour said she doesn’t expect Kaswatuka to replace outside hitters Tara Frantz or Amanda Aguilera in a starting role. “I don’t think somebody loses their starting job just because they have one bad match,” Seymour said.
