Have you been asked questions on campus involving current affairs? Questions on topics ranging from health care, Afghanistan, Iran, and other social issues like abortion or gay marriage? Matt Hoffman in the Communications Department has a show called “On the Street” from 3 to 4 p.m. every Thursday on UTARadio.com. He goes around campus to find the students’ opinions to put on the air. During the show, he also poses those questions to a guest panel for the day who then give their take on an issue. The panel usually consists of two people from different political ideologies. You would be surprised to hear the liberal or conservative guests’ opinion as they take on these sometimes personal topics and how their view may differ from that of their political affiliation. I have been a guest on the show covering both social, domestic and foreign policy matters, and it is great to hear the students interviewed to find out how politically in touch many are. Guests have included political science junior Colby Smith, an Iraq and Afghanistan wars veteran and College Republicans at UTA vice president, and Cohe Bolin, political science and journalism junior and The Shorthorn opinion editor. All opinions stated on the show are those of the guest, not the organizations. The show had its fourth broadcast yesterday with Student Congress President Kent Long and College Republicans at UTA president and nursing junior Matt Foster addressing Proposition 4, the proposed amendment to the Texas Constitution. If Prop 4 is passed, funding for Texas emerging research institutions could be available. Hoffman, when looking to host a show, said he wanted to cover students and get them involved “beyond the talking points” and to delve into the real issues. Hoffman is unbiased, acting as moderator, he is reminiscent of Tim Russert from the more balanced days of “Meet the Press” and takes on both sides of issues and the political spectrum. I hope many will start to tune in and listen to fellow students discuss today’s issues at great length and how they affect every one of us. Tune in to UTARadio.com and listen to the shows broadcast throughout the day, but especially Thursdays at 3 p.m. for “On the Street.” -Colt Ables is an finance senior and Vice Chair of the Texas College Republicans Views: 460 | E-mail
