The next step in finding a permanent chief academic officer and second-in-command to President James Spaniolo are the campus visits set to take place the first week of March.

The university will welcome three of the finalists from out-of-state and Ron Elsenbaumer, current interim Provost, Academic Affairs Vice President and finalist.

The other finalists include: Barbara Romzek, Social Sciences associate dean, in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas, Donald Bobbitt, dean of the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, and Jeremy Haefner, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, dean of the Graduate School, and dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Romzek said she was “very honored to be considered” as a finalist for the provost position and was looking forward to talk to other leadership and faculty during her visit.

“I have no pre-set agenda coming into the campus visit,” she said. “I think you have to get to know the institution ... You come in with the understanding of higher education and find out what resources, interests and opportunities for that institution before making any decisions.”

The University of Kansas associate dean said her motivation to apply for the position came from the “ambitious energy and exciting things” coming out of the university and meeting she had with the search committee.

The search committee co-chairs, industrial engineering professor John Priest and Beth Wright, College of Liberal Arts dean, both said they believe the committee found the best four candidates for the job.

Wright said there were a number of things that convinced the committee as such.

The committee culled the finalists from candidates “with numerous accomplishments in their present institutions and throughout their career” but transferability was the key in making their decision.

“For example, they may have had success in accomplishing things at a private institution, but that’s not comparable to a public university,” Wright said.

Library accounting coordinator Loretta Barker, who also served on the provost search committee, said the group found lots of things the applicants had in common, and some differences too.

“These four finalists just floated to the top,” she said.

Campus visits for the finalists are expected to take place March 3, 5, 7 and 10.

More details will be released from the Office of Public Affairs in the near future.
