A university committee anticipates drafting a proposal this month about the campus’ smoking policy, after a semester of debate on whether to ban tobacco.

The Tobacco Free Campus Initiative committee planned meeting at the end of the spring semester. H1N1 virus concerns and employee vacations put meeting opportunities on hold, said Kristin Sullivan, Media Relations assistant vice president. Students and staff established the committee in January to consider banning tobacco on campus.

Committee members plan having a closed meeting in mid-July and sending a proposal to President James Spaniolo toward the end of the month. It’s the president’s prerogative to take any action from the proposal, Sullivan said.

“Any changes made would be phased in over a couple of years,” she said.

The university received complaints about smokers disobeying rules, Jean Hood, Human Resources vice president, told Student Congress in the spring. The current policy bans smoking less than 50 feet from campus buildings and facilities.

There probably don't need to be any new regulations, if the campus police would only enforce the current rules. My wife was on a comittee a few years ago here, and was informed that quite simply, the police refused to implement the law. That's disgusting.

SC Resolution 09-A

Student Congress discussed this issue in the spring semester and came to the conclusion that the policy should be enforced before any additional restrictions were added. They came to this conclusion based on student opinion.
