Society has become dependent on smartphones like Apple’s iPhone and the BlackBerry. It’s almost unsafe and irresponsible to rely so much on one technological piece. It’s difficult to remember a time before the cellular phone. Our parents made due with water-bottle-size cell phones, but now phones fit nicely into 4-inch pockets. While today people hold the world in their palms, the one thing that stands the test of time is that technology wears out. The days of cell phone usage just for calls are long gone. Now, one can check e-mail, surf the Internet, plan business meetings and update his or her Twitter account among others. These miracle machines seem to perform every task short of slicing and dicing vegetables. But when they decide to go AWOL, there’s no one to call for help. Deciding to use just a single piece for all your technological needs isn’t a wise choice. While cell phones are built for function and ease, when they malfunction multiple features become unavailable. Where’s the ease in that? A lot of benefits come with purchasing a smartphone, but eventually the device will wear out. Either due to usage or the invention of a newer and better version, all technology gets replaced one way or another. — Macy Galvan is an English senior and a columnist for The Shorthorn Views: 1222 | E-mail
