Richard W. Fisher, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas president and CEO, speaks during the President’s Convocation for Academic Excellence. Fisher has served as Deputy U.S. Trade Representative. The annual convocation awards faculty and students through distinguished service to the university. (The Shorthorn: Jacob Adkisson) The convocation is held annually since its development 14 years ago as part of the centennial celebration of the university’s founding. Awards are given to faculty who distinguish themselves through service to the university, teaching and academic activities. Each college nominate students who exemplify academic excellence. Provost Donald Bobbitt said the University Scholars award is given to the top 1 percent of students. Each of the 250 students wore a cord designed specifically for the award, he said. “It is exciting to me to see students come across the stage and to hear about their accomplishments,” Bobbitt said. Bobbitt said the student awards inspire him to return to his office and do great work. President James Spaniolo, echoing Ralph Waldo Emerson, called excellence “the whisper you alone can hear.” Spaniolo said it’s an honor to have a chance to recognize students and faculty. “These awards are testimonies that you are among our very best,” Spaniolo said to the attendees. “They are reminders that great universities aren’t made of bricks and mortar, but rather exceptional men and women like you.” Convocation AwardsStudent AwardsUniversity Scholars - All “A” Honor Roll - Annual Celebration of Excellence by Students Recognition - Carolyn A. Fisher said learning is important, but understanding is more important. Lessons can be explained but no one can teach another to understand, he said. “What you have learned here will apply for real, forever,” Fisher said. Views: 1140 | E-mail
